If you consult Asian medicine handbook, on one of the first pages you would find Ginger. The Ginger root has a seemingly endless number of uses and benefits. If a super food exists, than this might be it. The plant is closely related to Cardamom and Turmeric.
The beauty of ginger is that it comes in so many forms. It can be fresh, it can be dried. It can be whole, powdered or in the form of an oil. While Eastern Cultures have the highest regards for the Ginger Root, the western world is just discovering it. The list of health benefits of consuming ginger seems to go on forever, but I have decided to list the most important ones. Just to make this list interesting and captivating, I am going to start with the lesser known ones. 1. Gingers helps remove excess gasOne of the least known benefits of ginger is that it helps remove excess gas. No person, no matter of their body weight, can feel comfortable in moving around, or even sitting, while feeling bloated. Being bloated pushes against your bladder and stomach, causing you to feel discomfort across your whole abdominal area. 2. Improves bone healthAs you age, maintaining bone health seems to become harder and harder. This is where ginger steps in. This benefit is secondary when drinking ginger tea, but it still is one of the recommended things to do if you’re trying to have healthier bones. The better indigestion and absorption that ginger provides will, in turn, increase your bone health dramatically. Think about this next time you’re about to go up a flight of stairs and your knee starts giving out. 3. Reduces InflammationAlthough lesser know, more people know about this benefit than for the first two. And because of a simple reason. Ginger was introduced to medieval Europe as an anti-inflammatory herbal medicine. Consuming ginger can help reduce inflammations and muscle pain. It can even help battle muscle soreness, but not by eliminating it. It will rather soothe your muscles so you can properly rest, which will in turn help you recover faster. 4. Lower blood sugar levelsTime for a miracle. Studies done by the American Diabetes Association have shown that ginger lowers blood sugar. Where’s the miracle you might ask. Well, scientists are not exactly sure how ginger works. The promising study has opened up new ways to treat old diseases. Before running to the kitchen and making yourself a cup of ginger tea, remember that It is highly recommended you consult your doctor first. 5. Helps increase cardiovascular healthWith fast and processed food all around us, it is very rare to see someone that doesn’t have problems with their cholesterol levels. Increased cholesterol can lead to artery clogging and poor cardiovascular health. Simply put, your heart has to pump thicker blood though narrower blood vessels. This, in turn, wears it down and makes it prone to disease. Ginger can help reducing your cholesterol levels, thus making your heart take a break from all that furious pumping. 6. Nausea - The most widely popular benefit of ginger. Apart from the anti-inflammatory properties, this is what ginger was primarily famous for. The miraculous ginger roots helps battle all forms of nausea. You name it, ginger prevents it. People that suffer from motion sickness report feeling better after consuming ginger. I would not, however, recommend having a cup of ginger tea if you’re getting nauseated during your vacation on a cruise liner. You knew you had morning sickness, you should’ve picked a different adventure. Furthermore, it can help prevent morning sickness during pregnancy and it is even recommended by some doctors. 7. It’s an aphrodisiac. The least known benefit that I found out during researching for this list. Eastern Cultures use ginger as an Aphrodisiac! Medically, this can be explained by the antioxidants present in the root of the Ginger plant. Antioxidants lead to improved circulation and improved circulation improves .. well anything really.
